About the hot tub stream
The stream was announced by Pokimane via her Twitter account. It is unclear right not which members of OfflineTV will appear in the stream and when exactly it will take place. Pokimane's birthday is on May 14th i.e. the coming Friday, however, it is unclear if the stream will take place on the day itself or around it. From the tweet it seems the event will be comedic in nature. It is yet to be seen how Twitch and viewers respond to the content.
What is a hot tub stream and why does this matter?
Over the past year, there has been a significant increase in the number of women sitting in hot tubs or pools and talking to viewers on Twitch. Collectively these type of streams has been dubbed 'hot tub meta'. The response to the rise in popularity of such streams has been polarised and caused division among the Twitch community. Many accuse the streams of being cheap and having a negative impact on the quality of the platform. Some female streamers have also pointed out that the presence of such streams puts pressure on female streamers to show more skin as it becomes an expectation from viewers on the platform. On the flip side, others are calling the criticisms misogynistic and poorly thought out. Some have called for an outright ban on the streams while others recommend a more nuanced approach.
Pokimane's thoughts on hot tub meta
During a recent stream, Pokimane called out Twitch for not taking any action about hot tub meta streams, "People toe the line so much that you need to have someone who can just, as a human, go to a stream and be like, ah, this is suggestive, and do something about that. That doesn’t mean a ban. But do something about that so that it's not just suggestive streams that kind of take over the whole platform."
