As per a memo issued to staff by CEO Bob Chapek, Disney is appointing an executive to lead its metaverse plans (via Reuters and CNBC). Mike White, who was formerly SVP of customer experience and platforms, has been promoted to SVP of the next storytelling and consumer experiences.
"Our firm has defined and redefined entertainment for nearly 100 years by harnessing technology to bring tales to life in deeper, deeper impactful ways," Chapek said in a statement to the media.
He went on to state, "Today, we have an opportunity to connect those universes and establish a whole new paradigm for how viewers perceive and participate with our tales."
"This is the so-called metaverse, which I believe is the next great storytelling frontier and the ideal environment in which to pursue our strategic pillars of Storytelling Excellence, Innovation, and Audience Focus."

Disney Has Expressed Interest In The Metaverse In The Past
Disney's ambitions to get involved with the metaverse were indicated by Chapek during the company's earnings report in November and again this week, though the company's plans have been unclear. Even if Disney's plan is yet unknown, given its massive collection of properties and willingness to bring them to life in both physical (theme parks) and digital (movies, TV shows, video games, etc.) formats, it's easy to see why the company is seriously considering metaverse play.

As per LinkedIn, White has been an executive at Disney since 2011. He also worked for Yahoo for more than nine years.
"While our designers will create the storytelling which will define our metaverse presence," Chapek stated in the memo, "Mike will establish our overall vision and strategy for the consumer journey across these new story worlds." "As part of this, Mike will immediately put together processes and structures for prioritizing and allocating resources, forming partnerships, and facilitating knowledge sharing." Mike also will manage a task force made up of senior executives from several departments within the company, notably technology, strategy, and, of course, storytelling."
