Think Out, Be Light: Designing Disability-Inclusive Communication Systems for Belonging and Participation

Think Out, Be Light began as an annual fashion show in Dallas, but it has grown into something bigger: a living example of how public experiences can be designed to include disabled people not just in theory, but in practice. Each year, children and young adults with disabilities step onto the runway alongside designers, artists, families, and civic partners. The event’s architecture - quiet room, pre-show activation, clear wayfinding, and visible community support - signals something both simple and profound: you are expected here, and your participation is the point.

This white paper uses Think Out, Be Light as a case study for upstream disability inclusion. Instead of starting with accommodations after systems are already built, it frames communication itself as the primary lever for belonging and participation. When invitations, websites, event spaces, and workplace messages are designed around non-disabled defaults, disabled people have to work twice as hard to show up, keep up, and be seen. By contrast, when communication is designed intentionally with accessibility, identity-safe language, and shared authorship, participation becomes easier, safer, and more sustainable.

Drawing on three decades of strategic communications and advertising experience through the Zoe Communications Agency, the paper introduces the Accessibility Communications Index (ACI) as a practical way to measure whether a message or experience is genuinely usable. ACI treats accessibility and clarity as release criteria, not afterthoughts. Combined with a behavior-change and social-psychology lens, the framework connects upstream design choices to downstream outcomes like attendance, voice, retention, and well-being.
