E-signatures and compliance requirements

The 'e' stands for electronic. As the term suggests, e-signatures are an electronic symbol that acts as a signature. Typically an e-signature is a person's name, similar to a conventional hand signature. However, this need not be the case. These electronic symbols are attached to e-forms and contracts as a means of demonstrating consent. E-signatures are legally binding. Typically, legally binding e-signatures need to have the following attributes:

  1. Demonstrate that the signer is who they claim to be
  2. The signer should demonstrate that they intended to sign the document electronically. Generally, this is accomplished by giving the signer an option to sign a paper hardcopy and allowing them to choose the electronic option
  3. The willingness of the signer can be shown. This is generally done by giving the signer an option to 'Cancel' at the beginning of the process
  4. The authenticity of the signature can be verified independently. Thus E-signatures generally also capture time stamps, create an email trail, mobile phone numbers, and IP addresses

What is Adobe Sign

Adobe Sign is Adobe's cloud-based e-signature service. It allows you to send, sign, track and manage documents electronically. The service can be used on desktop as well as mobile. Adobe Sign is part of Adobe's Document Cloud suite. It can be used as a stand-alone service or be integrated with a business's existing productivity apps, like Microsoft 365. Integrating Adobe Sign with Microsoft 365 makes it easier for businesses to process PDF contracts directly from Microsoft's apps.
Adobe ensures that its service is compliant with the legal requirements regarding e-signatures in countries around the world. Their flexible framework allows them to adapt the service to meet any changes in compliance requirements.
